Course Overview

This first course will guide you with taking the first and important steps in the whys and hows of using  Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) in general and Microsoft Project software in particular.

Topics and Learning Objectives

Unit 1 (2 hours 1/2): Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) and Microsoft Project Solutions

    • Understand the benefits and limitations of a PMIS
    • Learn about MS Project and MS Project Server popularity and what they can and cannot do for you
    • Recognize the benefits of increased MS Project skills and how to gain them
    • Getting started with our Sample MS Project 2010/2013
    • Exploring the sample project and creating a new blank project
    • Setting project information and assigning a start date to the project

Unit 2 (2 hours): Introduction to New MS Project Features (Ribbon interface, Backstage, Team Planner, Timeline, Views)

  • Getting to know the essential new features introduced with Microsoft Project 2010/2013
  • Identify the Ribbon tabbed menu and toolbar user interface
  • Explore a quick way to reallocate tasks from Backstage
  • Check out the new view of the entire project using Timeline
  • Recognize the new Task Inspector capabilities for resolving scheduling conflicts

Unit 3 (1 hours 45 minutes): Adding your First Tasks

  • Connect Project management knowledge with MS Project functionality
  • Getting comfortable with the Gantt Chart view and its powerful scheduling features
  • Understand the concept of a task within the context of MS Project
  • Create tasks and milestones in your project
  • Align good project management scheduling techniques with MS Project mastery

Unit 4 (2 hours): Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and MS Project Tasks

  • Define what is a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • Understand how a WBS works in MS Project
  • Discern how to logically group tasks in MS Project including subtasks and summary tasks
  • Capture how to create and use WBS numbering schemes in MS Project

Unit 5 (1 hours 45 minutes): Documenting and Importing Tasks

  • Learn the benefits of importing tasks from Microsoft Excel and Outlook
  • Observe situations where you might add notes to a task and use spell check
  • Explore why and how to attach an external file to a Microsoft Project task
